Bad fuel in Nigeria: the warning signs your engine gives before the damage is done

Every Nigerian driver has a station they swear by and a station they swear at. The reason is real: petrol quality here genuinely varies — between brands, between stations of the same brand, and between deliveries at the same station. Kerosene dilution, water contamination and low-octane blending are documented, recurring problems that the regulator (NMDPRA) periodically sanctions stations for.

The problem for you as a driver: by the time bad fuel feels bad, some of the damage is already done. Here's what to watch for — and how to catch it earlier than your own senses can.

Symptoms of a bad tank

Most of these appear within minutes to days of the fill-up:

  • Rough idle. The engine shakes or hunts at a standstill, especially with the AC compressor cycling.
  • Hesitation and flat spots. You press the accelerator and the car pauses before responding — worst when overtaking.
  • Knocking or pinging under load (that marble-rattle sound climbing a bridge). This is low octane detonating early, and it physically erodes pistons.
  • Hard starting, particularly first start of the morning after the contaminated fuel has settled.
  • A sudden drop in fuel economy. You're burning more litres to make the same power from worse fuel.
  • The check engine light, typically with lean-mixture or misfire codes: P0171, P0174, P0300-series.
  • Sulphur or kerosene smell from the exhaust.

One caveat: each of these symptoms can have other causes. That's why the sensor evidence below matters — it's specific to fuel.

What bad fuel does over months

A single bad tank is usually survivable. Repeated exposure is what kills components, in a predictable sequence:

  1. Injectors and pump. Contaminants and water corrode the fuel pump and gum injectors. Symptoms: whining pump, uneven spray, persistent rough running.
  2. Oxygen sensors. They're the engine's tastebuds, and dirty fuel coats them. A lazy sensor means the computer runs blind and rich, compounding the problem.
  3. Catalytic converter. The expensive one. Overheated by unburned fuel and poisoned by contaminants, it fails years early — that's the P0420 code so common on Nigerian cars, and a ₦85,000–₦250,000+ repair.
  4. Engine internals. Sustained knocking from low octane erodes piston crowns and ring lands. This is the slow, invisible damage that surfaces as an engine "suddenly" burning oil at 140,000 km.

Your engine already measures fuel quality — every second

Here is the part almost nobody uses. Your engine computer constantly measures how far it has to correct the fuel-air mixture from what it expects. These corrections are called fuel trims:

  • Short-term fuel trim (STFT) — the correction being applied right now.
  • Long-term fuel trim (LTFT) — the learned, persistent correction.

On healthy fuel and a healthy engine, trims sit near zero, drifting a few percent either way. Fill your tank with kerosene-diluted or low-octane petrol and the mixture goes lean; the computer compensates by adding fuel; trims climb sharply positive within one or two trips. The engine noticed the bad fuel before you did — it just had nowhere to tell you.

What to do if you suspect a bad tank

  • Don't top up over it. If the car runs poorly right after a fill-up, avoid diluting a full bad tank across weeks of driving. If symptoms are severe (heavy knocking, stalling), running the tank low and refilling at a trusted station is the cheap fix.
  • Note the station and the date — memory fades, receipts and app logs don't.
  • Drive gently while the bad fuel is in the tank: low load, no hard acceleration. Knock does its damage under load.
  • Watch the trims recover. After one or two good tanks, fuel trims should drift back toward zero. If LTFT stays high, something else (a vacuum leak, a tired oxygen sensor) now needs attention.
  • If the check engine light came on, read the codes before clearing them — the freeze frame records the moment of failure, and it's your evidence.

The habit that saves engines

You can't see inside a station's underground tank. But you can make a habit of checking what your engine thought of the last fill-up — the same way you glance at your bank app after a payment.
